Why is the Moon red tonight 2023

Why is the Moon red tonight 2023?

A lunar eclipse will be visible in parts of the United States on July 27th, 2023. The lunar eclipse will last for 1 hour and 11 minutes, and will be visible from North America, South America, Europe, Africa and parts of West Asia. It is not visible from Asia or Australia.

When does the Moon become red during an eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon. This can cause a shadow to fall on part of the Moon’s surface. The Earth’s shadow blocks sunlight that would normally reach the Moon. This means that only light that has been refracted through Earth’s atmosphere reaches this part of the Moon’s surface.

What causes this refraction?

During a total lunar eclipse, some of this light is reflected back towards space by our atmosphere (and sometimes other things in space). This light is then bent or refracted by our atmosphere so that it reaches Earth again as red light.
