Why we celebrate World Environment Day

World Environment Day is a day to celebrate the environment and encourage positive environmental action.

June 5th marks World Environment Day, an annual celebration of the environment that aims to encourage positive environmental action. This year’s theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution,” and we’re here to answer the question of why we celebrate World Environment Day.

What is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day was first celebrated in 1974, although it had been observed by several countries since 1970. The day was started by the United Nations General Assembly as a way to promote awareness of environmental issues, including climate change and pollution. The day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008, when it became a global event.

Why do we celebrate World Environment Day?

“We all share this planet, and we all have a responsibility to protect it,” says UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a statement on this year’s theme for World Environment Day: “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

“It is only through collective action that we can achieve our common vision of a clean and healthy environment for present and future generations.”

“Let us come together as one global family to make this world more sustainable for all.”

“Let us show our love for nature by caring for our oceans, rivers, forests and land.”

“Let us stand up against plastic pollution and make this planet great again!”
