Whoopi Goldberg was one of the original hosts when ABC launched The View in 1997. She was joined by Barbara Walters, Meredith Vieira, Star Jones and Debbie Matenopoulos as co-hosts for its first season. After two seasons, Jones and Vieira left to pursue other projects while Barbara Walters became a contributor rather than a full-time host. That meant that Whoopi was one of just two hosts remaining by 1999.
