Why is the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia

The Spanish Super Cup was moved to Saudi Arabia for security reasons.

On the same day that the Spanish Super Cup was set to be played, Spain’s national police force released a statement confirming that the match would not be taking place in Barcelona. The match between Barcelona and Sevilla had been scheduled to take place at Camp Nou on August 12th, but concerns over security in the region led to a change of venue. The Spanish Super Cup is a two-legged match that takes place before La Liga begins, pitting the winner of La Liga against the Copa del Rey winner. However, this year’s edition of the match will not be taking place in Spain at all.

Instead, it will be played in Saudi Arabia at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah. This is due to concerns over unrest in Catalonia and other parts of Spain following Catalonia’s declaration of independence from Spain earlier this year. The Catalonian independence movement has seen violent clashes between pro-independence and pro-Spanish demonstrators, with one death having already been reported as a result of these clashes. It is believed that moving the game out of Barcelona will help prevent further violence.
