Mumbai is one of the wettest cities in India, with an average rainfall of around 1449mm. It’s not unusual for Mumbai to receive this amount of rain every year, which makes it a very water-friendly city. Mumbai has a tropical climate and receives both the southwest and northeast monsoons, although it is only affected by the former between June and September. The city’s high temperatures and humidity are also ideal for heavy rainfall.

What causes heavy rain?

Heavy rain can be caused by many factors. In Mumbai’s case, the main reason behind its heavy rainfall is due to its proximity to the Arabian Sea. Warm air over the sea rises into the atmosphere and cools down when it hits higher levels of air pressure. This causes water vapour to condense into clouds that then release their precipitation on land as rain or snow.
