In 1971, members of The Grateful Dead were arrested in New Orleans for possession of marijuana and heroin after a police raid on their hotel room found both drugs in their possession along with several grams of cocaine and psychedelic mushrooms.

While this may have been one of the first times that “420” was used in reference to weed, there’s no evidence that it was coined by any member of The Grateful Dead or anyone affiliated with them.
