The movie is inspired by the killing of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist.

In January 2021, the film I Killed Gandhi was released in India. The movie was inspired by the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30th 1948 by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse. Although it is unclear whether or not Godse actually killed Gandhi, he did confess to planning and executing the murder with his co-conspirators. The film I Killed Gandhi depicts a fictional account of Godse’s final moments before he shot and killed Gandhi, as well as his life leading up to that point.

The I Killed Gandhi movie was not well received in India upon its release. In fact, it was banned in several states including Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The official reason for banning the film was because it “will hurt religious sentiments” but critics believe that this is a way for Hindu nationalists to censor anything they deem “anti-nationalist”. The government may have been worried about how this film would be received since it depicts a man who has become an icon of peace and tolerance being murdered by a religious extremist.
