The Happy Mondays and Black Grape singer Bez is one of the most distinctive looking musicians around. But his trademark look, which includes a crash helmet, is not just for show.
Bez was involved in a serious motorcycle accident in 2002, which left him with brain damage. Since then he has been forced to wear a helmet at all times as he still suffers from memory loss and seizures.
What happened to Bez?
Bez (real name Mark Berry) was riding his motorbike on the A6 near Rochdale when he crashed into the back of another vehicle. He suffered a fractured skull and spent four days in intensive care after being placed into an induced coma. He also had surgery to remove part of his skull to relieve pressure on his brain.
Why does Bez wear a crash helmet?
After suffering from seizures and having more than 40 operations, including having part of his skull removed, Bez was left with permanent brain damage. Doctors advised him that if he didn’t wear a crash helmet at all times he could suffer another seizure or even die.
