The film is based on the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

An upcoming film about the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi has been banned in India. The government has said that it will not allow any movie to be released that shows Gandhi’s assassin as a hero. The film is called “Gandhi to Hitler” and is directed by British filmmaker Ott, who also directed the critically acclaimed “Why I killed Gandhi”.

What was the reaction to Why I killed Gandhi?

The director of “Why I killed Gandhi”, Ott, received death threats for his portrayal of the assassin, Nathuram Godse. He also received hate mail from Hindu nationalists and members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), an organisation linked to Godse. A Hindu nationalist group even went so far as to organise a protest outside one of Ott’s screenings in Delhi.

Why did India ban this new film?

“Gandhi to Hitler” is about Nathuram Godse, who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. The title refers to Godse’s journey from being a follower of Gandhi’s non-violent philosophy, known as Satyagraha, to becoming an extremist who believed that violence was necessary for India’s freedom from British rule.
