The Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot in the stomach on April 20th, 2021. The attack took place at a campaign rally in Kawasaki, south of Tokyo. The Prime Minister is currently recovering from his injuries and has not yet been discharged from hospital. Shinzo Abe is the current Prime Minister of Japan and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). He has been Prime Minister since December 2012, following his election as leader of the LDP.

What happened to Shinzo Abe?

On April 20th, Shinzo Abe was shot while he was delivering a speech at a campaign rally for upcoming elections.

The attacker reportedly approached Mr Abe with two handguns hidden under newspapers before firing at him twice.

The attacker, who has been named as Takahiro Shiraishi, said he wanted to kill Mr Abe because he thought it would make him “famous”.

He said: “I did it to grab attention.”
