Target is a US retail store that has been boycotted after they stopped selling Confederate flag merchandise.

A number of people are boycotting Target after the retail store stopped selling Confederate flag merchandise. The chain was one of many to stop selling the controversial symbol, which is associated with white supremacy, following the 2015 Charleston church shooting. While some have applauded Target’s decision, others are outraged and have decided to boycott the chain. Here’s why some people are boycotting Target and how you can join in.

What is the boycott?

Target has received a lot of backlash for its decision to stop selling Confederate flag merchandise. People who oppose this decision have been sharing videos on social media explaining why they will no longer be shopping at Target stores. The hashtag #BoycottTarget has also been trending on Twitter since June 2015.

Why are people boycotting Target?

“We removed those items from our assortment because we heard from guests that we didn’t deliver an experience they expected when shopping our brand.”

According to a statement released by Target in June 2015, the company stopped selling Confederate flag merchandise due to concerns raised by customers.

“We never want to offend any of our guests,” reads the statement. “We all agree that the Confederate flag represents slavery and division and we should not sell it or promote it in any way.”

The chain also confirmed that they would be removing all items bearing images of the Confederate flag from their shelves.

However, many people disagreed with this decision, including several high-profile politicians.

Former Governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley said she was “disappointed” by Target’s decision to remove confederate flags from their stores.

“I know that for many Americans, including myself, it’s a sensitive issue and I understand their point of view,” she said at a press conference.
