What is heat of combustion?

The heat of combustion (HOC) is the amount of energy released when a substance burns.

It is measured in kilojoules per gram (kJ/g) and the higher the number, the more energy released. The HOC is dependent on what type of fuel you are burning. For example, if you burn wood, it will release less energy than if you were to burn coal. If you burn both wood and coal together, however, then they will have similar HOC values.

One study found that an iPhone XS Max has an HOC of 5 kJ/g, while a Galaxy S10 has a value of 8 kJ/g.
