President Donald Trump’s Space Force has been in the works since 2019, but it’s still unclear what the plan is. The idea of a Space Force was first floated by Vice President Mike Pence at a meeting of the National Space Council in August 2018. Since then, a lot of details have emerged about how this new branch of the military will work. However, there are still some major questions that remain unanswered. Here’s everything we know about Trump’s Space Force so far.

What is President Trump’s space force?

Trump officially announced his plans for a space force on June 18th, 2018 at a meeting of the National Space Council. He said that he had directed Defence Secretary James Mattis to begin creating a sixth branch of the military to be called “Space Force” and would be focusing on space security.

How will it work?

“The time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of our armed forces,” Trump said during his announcement. “To prepare for war and have warfighting capabilities second to none.” The new branch will reportedly be created by 2020, with an initial budget of $8 billion over five years. However, it remains unclear exactly how this new branch will operate or what its duties will be.
