The term Explain is used to describe a situation where a person or persons attempts to justify their actions or words by providing a reason for them. This explanation can be either sincere, which is often called an apology, or insincere, which is known as an excuse. In the case of Explain, the phrase was most notably used by President Donald Trump in response to the Mueller Report and his alleged collusion with Russia during the 2016 presidential election.

What does explain mean?

Explain can be defined as “to give reasons for”. It can also be used in other ways such as “to make something clear” and “to provide evidence for”. The word has been around since at least 1611 when it was first recorded in John Smith’s ‘A Map of Virginia, With a Description of the Countrey, the Commodities, People, Government and Religion’.

How did explain become popular?

In May 2019, US President Donald Trump gave an interview with ABC News where he said that he didn’t think that special counsel Robert Mueller would ask him to testify before Congress because he had already explained himself “very well” during his written answers. This led many people on social media to criticise Trump’s use of the word explain instead of excuse.
