Australia’s Nathan Lyon has been called Garry for as long as he can remember.

Australian cricketer Nathan Lyon has revealed that he has been called Garry since childhood, with his parents even giving him the middle name Garry after a character from the TV show Friends. The 29-year-old off-spinner was given the nickname when he was young and it stuck, with Lyon never having considered changing it. While Lyon is used to being called Garry, it seems like his teammates have only recently started calling him by that name.

The first time that Australian cricketer Nathan Lyon heard someone call him Garry was in 2016 when Australian captain Steve Smith addressed him by his full name during a match against Sri Lanka. The nickname came about when an older player who had known Lyon since he was young referred to him as Garry and other players picked up on it. Since then, the nickname has become more common and is now commonly used by team mates.

“I’ve always been called Garry,”

“I’m not sure where it came from but I think my parents gave me that middle name because they liked a character from Friends.”
