Valentine’s Day became popular, thanks to Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Chaucer wrote about a fictional character named Parliament of Fowls, who fell in love with a female called Philomena after she rejected him at an archery tournament.
This story was based on Chaucer’s own experience with Eleanor de Bohun, who he had fallen for at an archery tournament in 1366 but was too shy to approach her himself.
