Why is Tiktok being banned

TikTok is a short video sharing platform that was acquired by Bytedance in 2017.

Chinese video sharing app TikTok has been banned from the country’s Apple and Google app stores. The app, which is owned by Bytedance, was already blocked on social media site WeChat, which is also owned by Bytedance. In an announcement to investors, the Chinese government said that TikTok had been removed for containing “vulgar” content.

The government also stated that it would be carrying out “systematic inspections” of all similar apps to ensure they were in line with China’s strict internet laws.

TikTok claims to have more than 200 million users in China alone. The app allows users to create short videos using a range of filters and special effects. It has faced criticism from parents who say it allows inappropriate content to be shared with children.
