A tsunami warning has been issued for Hawaii after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the island, sparking fears of a destructive wave of water.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the quake was centred off the south coast of Hawaii at around 11:32pm local time on Friday night. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert for Hawaii, saying: “An earthquake measuring 7.7 in magnitude has occurred off the south coast of the Big Island of Hawai’i.”

“Widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible,” it added.
