The Sun is red today because of a phenomenon called a “super moon”.

The Sun has turned red today, and the reason why it looks so strange is that it’s due to a phenomenon called a “super moon”. Super moons are caused when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear bigger and brighter than normal. The last time this happened was in September 2018, but tonight (October 27th) will be even more impressive because the Moon will be closer than usual to Earth. This makes it what’s known as a “supermoon”.

As well as being larger and brighter than normal, the supermoon will also appear redder than usual. This is due to something called Rayleigh scattering, which means that the light from the Sun can be deflected by particles in our atmosphere.
