The policy was put into place after the drone collision with an airplane carrying the Prime Minister and his family on July 4th, 2022. The collision led to the death of 27 people on board the plane, including all three of the Johnson family’s children. This was one of many similar incidents involving drones and planes, so the government decided it needed to take action.
