Savannah Guthrie is the co-anchor of NBC’s Today show.

Savannah Guthrie, who co-anchors NBC’s Today show, has been granted a leave of absence after her daughter was born with a rare congenital heart defect. The news anchor will be working from home for an unspecified amount of time while her daughter undergoes surgery. Guthrie announced the news on Twitter on October 29th, writing that she and husband Mike Feldman were “so grateful” to the doctors and nurses at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center for their care.

Guthrie and Feldman have been married since 2006 and have two children together. Their first child, a son named Charley Feldman, was born in 2010. Their second child, daughter Alice Feldman, was born on October 28th with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), which affects one in every 5,000 newborns. HLHS is a congenital heart defect that requires surgery to repair before age two or else it can lead to death.

HLHS is described as a “severely underdeveloped left side of the heart” by Mayo Clinic experts. The condition occurs when blood flow from the heart is reduced or completely blocked because of improper development of the left ventricle chamber or major arteries leaving the heart.
