In 2021, Russia and Ukraine have been at war for more than a year.
Russia and Ukraine have been at war since early 2020. The conflict began when Russian-backed separatists in the eastern part of the country declared independence from Ukraine. The fighting has killed thousands of people and displaced hundreds of thousands more. While peace talks have taken place over the years, they’ve never resulted in a lasting ceasefire.
The Ukrainian government blames Russia for starting the conflict by sending troops into its territory. It also accuses Russia of supporting the separatists with weapons, supplies, and soldiers.
Russia denies these claims, instead blaming Ukrainian nationalists for starting the violence. It says that it intervened to protect ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine from what it called “fascists” in Kiev.
