NATO has been reluctant to help Ukraine because of the country’s membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
The NATO military alliance has not helped Ukraine militarily in its conflict with Russia, and it’s all because of a treaty signed by the country back in 1992. The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is an intergovernmental military alliance that was created in 1992 as a response to the fall of the Soviet Union. The organization currently consists of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. Although many countries have since left the organization, including Georgia and Uzbekistan, Ukraine has remained a member since its inception.
NATO’s reluctance to help Ukraine is due to this treaty which prevents any country from joining both organizations at once. In fact, it even prevents countries from one organization from joining another if they were ever to leave. As such, NATO can only support countries that are not members of other alliances or unions like this one.
