Why is Instagram not working

Instagram is experiencing technical difficulties and users are unable to access the app.

The popular photo-sharing social media site Instagram has been down for over two hours now, and many users are unable to access the app. Users across the world have reported that they are not able to log into their accounts or upload new photos, although it seems that this is only affecting some people. There are currently no known reasons as to why Instagram is experiencing technical difficulties.

What is Instagram?

Instagram, also known as IG, is a free photo-sharing social media platform owned by Facebook Inc., which was launched in October 2010. The app allows users to take pictures or videos using their smartphones and apply filters to them before sharing them with other users on the platform.

What happened?

The Verge, The Independent, The New York Times, and BBC News, all reported that Instagram was experiencing technical difficulties around 2:00 pm EST on October 27th, although there were no official reports from Instagram or Facebook about any problems at the time.

After being down for nearly two hours, a spokesperson for Instagram said that they were aware of issues with logging into their accounts and uploading photos but could not confirm when it would be back up again.
At 3:00 pm EST, the website Down Detector reported over 11 thousand reports of issues with accessing the app.
At 4:00 pm EST, Down Detector reported over 18 thousand reports of issues with accessing the app.
At 5:00 pm EST, Down Detector reported over 27 thousand reports of issues with accessing the app.
At 6:00 pm EST, Down Detector reported over 37 thousand reports of issues with accessing the app.
At 7:00 pm EST (8:00 pm GMT), Down Detector reported just under 41 thousand reports of issues with accessing the app.
As of 9:15 pm GMT (10:15 pm EST), Down Detector reported over 45 thousand reports of issues with accessing the app.
