The name “Coorg” comes from the Kannada word “Kodagu” which means “Land of Forests” or “Land of Woods”. It was named this because it used to be covered in dense forests before it was colonized by the British.

Kodagu is an administrative district in Karnataka that includes Coorg and other neighboring regions. Kodagu has an area of 4,102 square kilometers and a population of 1,062,000 people as per 2011 census data. Kodagu has two divisions: Madikeri and Virajpet. The district headquarters are located at Madikeri.
