Victoria Day is celebrated every year on May 24th in Canada. It marks a day to celebrate the life of Queen Victoria, who died on January 22nd 1901. The holiday was created by Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King after he had been approached by various groups across Canada requesting a national holiday be created in honour of Queen Victoria’s memory.
How is it celebrated?
The holiday is often celebrated by parades across Canada and special events hosted by schools and municipalities. In addition to this, many cities hold an annual fair or festival that includes music performances, games and rides for children as well as local food vendors.
Why do we celebrate it?
Queen Victoria ruled during a time when women were not allowed to vote or hold public office positions like Prime Minister or President. However, she still managed to make an impact on both her country as well as the world at large through her leadership skills and decision making abilities during challenging times such as those brought about by World War I and World War II.
