HBO Max is the new name for HBO’s streaming service.
HBO Max, or HBO’s streaming service, is getting a new name. The platform will now be known as HBO Max, after parent company WarnerMedia announced the change in a statement on October 25th. The name change will take effect on November 1st, just in time for the release of Joss Whedon’s ‘The Nevers’ and the debut of new shows including ‘Watchmen’ and ‘His Dark Materials.’
What is HBO Max?
HBO Max is a streaming service owned by WarnerMedia, which was created after AT&T bought Time Warner. It’s similar to Netflix in that it offers a variety of original content and movies to subscribers. While its library isn’t quite as large as Netflix’s, it does have some great titles that you won’t find on other platforms such as ‘Westworld,’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ and more.
Why did HBO Max change its name?
In an interview with The Verge, AT&T CEO John Stankey explained why he wanted to bring the brand together under one umbrella.
“So we’re trying to get all our brands together under one umbrella,” he said. “We’ve got Turner and Warner Bros., but we didn’t have something that felt like it captured all of our content brands.”
In short, Stankey wanted something that would encompass all of their different properties so they could promote them more effectively.
“I think you’ll see us using [the new branding] across all of our products,” he said.
While it might seem odd for them to change their name from HBO Go to HBO Now back in 2015 only to switch back again now, this branding makes sense given how much content they produce under these different labels.
