In 2019, Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 27th. The day always falls on the last Monday of May. The exception was in 1918 when it fell on June 30th due to World War I.
What happened on Memorial Day?
“The Star-Spangled Banner”
On September 14, 1814, during the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” after witnessing an American victory over British forces at Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. It was later designated as America’s national anthem by President Herbert Hoover in 1931.
