It’s a common sight on a hot summer’s day: A line of ants scurrying around in a seemingly endless circle. Now scientists have revealed that the insects aren’t lost, but are actually trying to stay cool.

A team from Stanford University studied the behaviour of harvester ants and found that they walk in circles to regulate their body temperature.
