Sidhu Moose Wala was one of the most controversial figures in British politics during the 2023 election. The former newsreader, who is also known as Sidhu Moose for his distinctive facial hair, had been a regular fixture on television screens for decades before deciding to throw his hat into the ring for a seat in Parliament. Sidhu Moose Wala announced that he would be standing as an independent candidate in Bradford West, despite having no previous political experience. Although he lost to Labour’s Imran Hussain by just over 1,000 votes, Sidhu Moose Wala still became a household name.
During his campaign, Sidhu Moose Wala was criticized for several racist and sexist comments that he made on social media prior to 2015. Many of these comments were unearthed by rival parties and even led to calls for him to be arrested under hate speech laws. However, no charges were ever brought against him.
