A two-minute long salute was fired from Hyde Park at noon today to mark the death of King Abdullah II of Jordan. The monarch passed away on the evening of January 23rd, 2019, after suffering from a heart attack. He was succeeded by his son, Prince Hussein. The 82-gun salute is reserved for heads of state and is used to mark the death of a monarch. It is also known as “The King’s Salute”.

There are various levels of Honours that can be awarded to people by the British monarch to reward them for services to the country. A knighthood or a damehood is known as a GBE, which stands for Grand Cross of the British Empire. Knighthoods are given to men, while damehoods are given to women.
