What is the backstory behind ‘The Last Days of Sandy Cheeks’?

Sandy Cheeks, the squirrel who moved to the surface in season two, was a fan favorite character on “SpongeBob SquarePants”. But she was also one of the most mysterious. Her backstory was never fully explored, until her death in season 10. The Last Days of Sandy Cheeks episode was written by Luke Brookshier and Tom King, who had worked on several other episodes including The Splinter and Gary Takes a Bath. The episode is considered to be one of the best episodes in SpongeBob history.

In this episode, we learn that Sandy has been living at Shell City for quite some time. She decides to return to Bikini Bottom after feeling homesick. But when she arrives back home, she realizes that everyone has moved on without her.
