Jon Gruden, who coached the Oakland Raiders from 1998 to 2001, has been named as the new head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The former Super Bowl-winning coach will be tasked with turning around a team that went 5-11 last season and hasn’t made the playoffs since 2007. It’s not entirely clear why Gruden left his job as an analyst for ESPN to return to coaching, but there are a few possible reasons.

Why did Jon Gruden leave ESPN?

Gruden had been working as an analyst for ESPN since 2009 and was signed through 2021. He had worked on Monday Night Football and Monday Night Countdown and had been considered one of their most popular analysts. However, he’d also expressed interest in returning to coaching at some point in his career. In fact, he was close to taking over as head coach of Tennessee in 2010 before changing his mind at the last minute.
