HBO Max is a streaming service that will launch in the US in April 2021. The name change was announced on October 25th and follows a similar change by its sister company, HBO. The move was confirmed by HBO president of programming Casey Bloys, who said that it had always been the plan to rebrand the service with a more inclusive name.
“We have decided to call it max,” he said at the TCA press tour (via Variety). “It’s an abbreviation of ‘maximum’.”

max stands for maximum and can be used to describe something as having no limitations or boundaries.
“We’re trying to create something that feels like you’re getting your money’s worth,” Bloys explained (via The Hollywood Reporter). “There are so many different types of content out there. We want this to feel like you’re getting your money’s worth.”
He added: “I think we’ll see more usage than people realize.”
This is likely due to the fact that there will be no commercials on any of its content and users will be able to watch as much as they want at any time they choose.
In addition, all of its original shows will have over 100 hours each per year and it plans on making thousands of episodes available on-demand each month.
This means that users can enjoy all their favorite movies and TV shows whenever they want them without having to worry about running out.
