In 2021, Eileen Gu decided to leave the UK and move to China after becoming disillusioned with the NHS. The junior doctor, who had been living in Manchester, was worried about what would happen to her patients if she lost her job. She explained that “it was never my intention to stay in the UK for so long” and that she felt like she had “done everything I could do here”. The 29-year-old is now working as a general practitioner in Guangzhou.
Why did Eileen Gu lose her job?
As a junior doctor, Eileen worked at Manchester Royal Infirmary from 2017 until 2021. However, when it was announced that there would be a major restructuring of the NHS by Health Secretary Boris Johnson, Eileen began to worry about what would happen if she lost her job. She said: “I wasn’t confident that I’d be able to find another position within the NHS given how many other doctors were leaving.”
