San Diego Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn called a timeout with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter of their Week 3 game against the Denver Broncos.

The San Diego Chargers were leading the Denver Broncos by a score of 20-13 when they took possession of the ball on their own 35-yard line with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter. Head coach Anthony Lynn decided to call a timeout, even though his team was not facing any time pressure and could have taken all of the time remaining on the clock to drive downfield and kick a field goal. The Chargers ended up kicking a field goal, but it wasn’t good enough to win as they lost 23-20.

Why did Anthony Lynn call that timeout?

There are two possible reasons why Anthony Lynn called that timeout. The first is that he simply wanted to give his team some rest after having just run an offensive play. There is no rule against calling a timeout during this time, so it’s certainly within his rights as head coach to do so if he feels like it will help his team perform better. The second reason is that he wanted to make sure his team had enough time for one more play before attempting a field goal. This would allow them more opportunities if they missed or got stopped short of the end zone.
