Why dangal songs are not on Spotify

Spotify’s decision to pull Dangal songs is not only affecting fans of the movie, but also the film’s stars.

It’s been a week since Spotify announced that it would be pulling all Indian music from its platform. While this move was done to comply with Indian law, which requires music companies to have a local partner in order to operate in the country, the decision has caused quite a stir among both fans and artists. The removal of Dangal songs from Spotify is particularly troublesome for Aamir Khan and his family, who have yet to find an Indian streaming service willing to take them on.

Why are Dangal songs no longer available on Spotify?

In 2016, India introduced new laws that require foreign streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music to enter into agreements with local record labels. These deals allow rights holders to collect royalties on music played by users. The law also requires these companies to block access from users located in India if they do not have agreements with local labels.

What does this mean for listeners?

“Indian artists will be blocked by default,” said Prateek Sharma, co-founder of one of India’s largest independent digital distribution platforms called Zevera Music. “This means that you can’t listen [to] any song by any artist.” This restriction applies regardless of whether or not you have a subscription plan. In addition, the law doesn’t just affect artists from India; it affects anyone who has ever lived in or visited the country as well.
