What does it mean for Christians?

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ by Roman soldiers on April 3rd 33 AD (or 30 AD). The Romans were occupying Judea at this time and had strict rules about what was allowed during Passover week (the week leading up to Easter Sunday). According to Jewish law, no executions could be carried out during Passover week. However, because Jesus was crucified outside of Jerusalem at Golgotha (which means “place of the skull”), which was outside Roman jurisdiction, they were able to carry out his execution without breaking their own laws.
