Why are flights cancelled today

The British Airways strike has left thousands of passengers stranded and frustrated.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled today as a result of the British Airways strike, which is now in its second day. The strike began at 6:00am on October 28th and is expected to last until 6:00pm on October 29th. In total, over 1,000 flights have been cancelled due to the strike action. The strikes are in response to planned changes to BA’s pension scheme that would see employees pay more into their pensions while also receiving less when they retire.

The BA pension scheme is one of the largest in the UK and holds £22 billion in assets, with a surplus of £2 billion. However, this surplus has decreased by £1 billion since 2018 due to changes made by former CEO Alex Cruz. These changes included increasing employee contributions from 8% to 10% and changing the retirement age from 65 to 67.

In a statement released on October 27th, British Airways said that it was “very disappointed” with the decision by Unite union members to go ahead with industrial action. It also stated that it had offered an 11% increase in compensation for those who will retire after April 2020 but was rejected by Unite.
