In this new series, a team of linguists, researchers and academics are shown looking into the evolution of English over time. One of their first topics is to explore why “the main” is considered to be a stronger word than “a main”. It’s not something that many people have ever thought about before, but it’s an interesting topic for a documentary to cover. In fact, there are many different reasons as to why “the main” might be considered stronger than “a main”, although some of them are quite complex.
One theory behind this difference in strength between “the main” and “a main” is that it has something to do with Germanic languages. For example, Germanic languages like German have a definite article that looks similar to English’s article “the”. This definite article in German comes before singular nouns just like English’s does. In addition, many other languages around the world also use definite articles in their language too.
