HMRC has been accused of illegally taxing Child Benefit.

The government has been accused of breaking the law by taking money from Child Benefit payments, in a move that could affect millions of families. HMRC has been forcing people to pay tax on their Child Benefit payments since April 2020, despite the fact that this is not allowed under the law. The money is then taken from their bank accounts, with many families being unaware that they have been charged until it’s too late.

A spokesperson for HMRC said: “Child Benefit is taxable and we are required to collect tax on it. We do not want to do this but we are required to do so by law.” However, there is no legal requirement for HMRC to take money from Child Benefit payments and there are no plans to change this in the future.
