Why we celebrate Makar Sankranti in Hindi

The word ‘Makar’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Makara’, which means a fish. Sankranti, on the other hand, is a term used to describe the movement of celestial bodies. So, it’s only natural that this festival is associated with water and fish.

This festival also has different names in different parts of India. In North India, it is known as Uttarayan or Uttarayana and in South India as Pongal or Bhogi.
