Why do we celebrate 26 January?

Mandela was born on July 18th 1918 and became an anti-apartheid activist at a young age. He became president of South Africa after his release from prison in 1990, serving until 1999 when he stepped down after serving one term. He died at home on December 5th 2013 at the age of 95.

“Freedom Day” means different things to different people around the world. In South Africa, it commemorates freedom from oppression and discrimination under apartheid rule.
