The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato) was formed in 1949 to defend Western Europe from the Soviet Union.

Nato was formed in 1949, as a result of the Soviet Union’s growing influence in Eastern Europe. It was created by 12 countries, including the United States, Canada and several European nations. Nato was originally known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and it’s goal was to stop Soviet expansion into Western Europe. The Soviet Union eventually collapsed in 1991, ending the Cold War and leaving Nato with no purpose.
