Harry Kane was caught offside in the second half, but the goal stood.

Harry Kane’s controversial offside goal for England against Switzerland was allowed to stand, despite replays showing that he was offside. The striker was judged to be onside by the assistant referee and the goal stood, despite Kane being in an offside position when the ball was played into him. This means that he is now level with Michael Owen as England’s all-time leading goalscorer.

What is an offside rule?

An offside rule is a set of rules designed to prevent players from interfering with play unfairly. It also prevents teams from gaining an unfair advantage by having too many players in an attacking position. The exact rules vary from sport to sport, but generally speaking a player must not be in front of the ball when it is played forward by a teammate. In football (soccer), there are two types of offside: being in an offside position and being involved in active play while being in an offside position.

What happened during Harry Kane’s goal?

In today’s match between England and Switzerland, Harry Kane scored what looked like a perfectly good goal to put England 2-0 up after Raheem Sterling had opened the scoring early on. However, replays showed that Harry Kane had been standing ahead of his teammate Kieran Trippier when he played the ball into him. This meant that Harry Kane should have been ruled as being “offside” and therefore unable to score for England.
