The former Beatle was shot dead by Mark David Chapman in New York City on December 8, 1980.

On December 8, 1980, John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman. The former Beatle had just returned to his apartment building in New York City after a recording session when he was approached by Chapman. The man asked for Lennon’s autograph and then pulled out a gun and fired five shots at the musician. He died of his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The assassination is one of the most famous crimes in American history, but it’s also one of the most controversial. For decades, people have been trying to find out why John Lennon was killed.

Chapman became obsessed with The Catcher in the Rye as a teenager and believed that it told him how to live his life. He began writing letters to J.D Salinger asking for advice on how to be like Holden Caulfield from the book, but Salinger ignored them. As he grew older, Chapman became more convinced that Salinger would have been able to help him if he had responded.

Chapman decided that Salinger’s silence meant that he must not care about him anymore and therefore stopped writing letters to him. In 1976, however, he started writing again after reading an article about J.D Salinger’s decision not to publish any more books.

He wrote: “I’m sure you’re not interested in me anymore,” but this time there was no response from J D Salinger who had moved away from New York City where he lived with his wife Claire Douglas and their daughter Margaret.

In 1978 Mark David Chapman moved into an apartment above a bar where a friend worked as a bartender.

He began working as a security guard at Central Park Zoo in 1979 where he met John Lennon.

Chapman often spent time outside Lennon’s apartment building which led neighbours there to believe that they were friends.

However both men denied this claim saying they only knew each other casually.

On October 9th 1980 John Lennon signed an album for Mark David Chapman who then left with it.
