Sri Lanka is facing a crisis over the detention of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sri Lanka is facing a political crisis after President Maithripala Sirisena ordered the arrest of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, who has been holed up in his home since Sunday. Sirisena’s order came after police raided Rajapaksa’s home in Colombo on Tuesday morning, but he was not there. A warrant for his arrest was issued by the Supreme Court on Monday and Rajapaksa was expected to be questioned about alleged corruption during his decade-long rule.

Rajapaksa has denied any wrongdoing and called for an emergency meeting of parliament to discuss what he called “an extraordinary attack” on democracy. The government says it will not let parliament meet until it locates Rajapaksa.

What happened between Sirisena and Rajapaksa?

“Sirisena’s U-turn came after he sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe last week, saying that he had lost confidence in him. He then installed Mahinda Rajapakse as prime minister and made him leader of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). The move sparked violent protests across the country, with demonstrators accusing Sirisena of trying to usurp power through a coup.”
