How did the crisis start?

It all started when pro-Russian Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was ousted from power in February 2014 after widespread protests. He was forced out of office by his former political allies after deciding not to sign an association agreement with the European Union. This agreement would have strengthened ties between the EU and Ukraine, and many Ukrainians were eager for it to be signed. Instead, Yanukovych decided to pursue closer ties with Russia instead.
