Muharram is a holy month in the Islamic calendar, and is often celebrated with colorful processions.
The Islamic holy month of Muharram begins on October 1st. It is one of the four sacred months in the Islamic calendar, and Muslims around the world celebrate it with processions, prayers, and other religious rituals. The exact origin of Muharram isn’t known, but many believe that it began when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ordered a fast to commemorate the death of his grandson Imam Hussain ibn Ali (RA). Other sources say that this was simply a continuation of pre-Islamic practices which took place during this time. While Muharram isn’t considered as important as Ramadan or Eid al-Adha by most Muslims, it still holds a special place in their hearts.
The main event that takes place during Muharram is Ashura. This commemoration honors Imam Hussain ibn Ali (RA), who was killed in 680 AD during the Battle of Karbala while fighting against Yazid I. The battle occurred because Yazid wanted to be caliph even though he wasn’t related to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This led to him being considered an illegitimate ruler by many people at the time.
