The festival has no fixed date, and can be anywhere between February 1st and March 10th. The exact date changes every year depending on when the new moon falls. It’s also celebrated by Jains, who revere Mahavira, one of their 24 tirthankaras (saints).
The most important aspect of Mahashivratri is fasting. This means that no food or water can be consumed during this time. Devotees will often spend the day in temples and pray to Lord Shiva, who they believe to be a symbol of detachment from worldly pleasures.
